The Dore Wesbury Mk1 certainly is noisy when the gears are engaged, for which reason the gearbox is generally regarded as the weakest point in a generally well-designed benchtop sized vertical mill. The pulleys give you three speeds with the gearbox disengaged and the machine runs quietly enough.
